The JNUL holds the world's largest collection of Jewish marriage contracts (ketubbot). This project makes accessible over 2,000 ketubbot from more than 50 different countries, covering a time period of over 900 years and is a major resource for research in Jewish history, customs, law, and art.
The catalog includes all names appearing in each ketubbah (bride, groom, witnesses, scribe) and can be searched via a wide range of parameters. A country and city list is also available. This catalog makes the repository an important resource for genealogical research.
The ketubbah images can be viewed in several resolutions, the highest of which is equivalent to examining the ketubbah under a magnifying glass.
The repository brings together the collections of over 20 institutions and private collectors.
The site also contained a virtual exhibition:
'Al rosh simhati - Jerusalem in Ketubba Illuminations.
Technical information:
The ketubbot have been digitized either from CibaChrom microfilm or directly from the originals using i2S-Digibookbook scanner into TIFF master files. They are presented in several resolutions as jpeg files.
Some of the higher resolution images reside in remote servers of participating institutions and the linking to them is fully integrated into the site.
